Abilene Network Member
WVU is also a member of the Abilene Network with OC-192 (10 gigabits per second) access through the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. Abilene is"…an Internet2 high-performance backbone network that enables the development of advanced Internet applications and the deployment of leading-edge network services to Internet2 universities and research labs across the country. The network has become the most advanced native IP backbone network available to universities participating in Internet2."
Membership has meant that WVU faculty working in HPCC have been able to "attend" a course on computational neurosciences sponsored by the National Science Foundation, originating from Carnegie Mellon University, Montana State University, and Yale University via an Internet2 video conferencing system in their own WVU laboratory. This enables the HPCC experts to become knowledgeable about neurosciences and work with the experts at the WVU Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute in developing HPCC-based models to help understand the pathology of diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
